As a family of four, we live in the beautiful town of Zutphen in the Netherlands, and we are taking you along for a day during our summer holiday.
This summer we’re once again in Denmark with our boys; Jim and Fos. The Danish life philosophy of “hygge” (literally “well-being”) emphasises enjoying the small, everyday things, quality time with loved ones, and creating a cozy and warm atmosphere. This, along with the child-friendliness, space, nature, and people, is why we return every year.
And we’re doing another camper road trip this year.. Today we’re staying at a campsite in Aarhus—after Copenhagen, the nicest city in Denmark if you ask us. We brought our bikes, so we hop on and cycle toward the city. It’s just under 25 minutes by bike, but a super fun ride. Our first stop is at our favourite bakery: Jumbo Bakery. You can really get the best pastries and coffee here. We can never choose just one, so we usually end up trying a little bit of everything they have that day.
We cycle on to let the boys run around a bit. By the waterfront there’s a great spot where you can play football and basketball, and there’s an amazing fountain where the kids can play on nice days. It’s become a tradition for us to stop here.
After a game of football and some wet clothes from the fountain, we hop back on our bikes and ride over to the Harbour Bath. This is such a fun spot right in the middle of the city. Different swimming pools, water skiing, a sandbox, nice eateries, and amazing architecture—you’ll find it all in this lively neighbourhood: Aarhus. Unfortunately, it was too cold to go swimming, but Fos quickly entertained himself in the sandbox, so we slipped onto a terrace.
Aarhus is also fantastic for shopping, but we decided to cycle back to the campsite. Since it’s right by the sea, we ended the day by tossing stones off the pier before heading to bed.
